Intercontinental Academia will be a laboratory for new ways of producing knowledge
The Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of São Paulo (IEA-USP) and the Institute for Advanced Research of the University of Nagoya (IAR) are leading a inter-institutional, interdisciplinary and global project: the unprecedented Intercontinental Academia (ICA).
An initiative of the UBIAS network, an international association that brings together 34 institutes of advanced study based in universities of 19 countries, the ICA will bring together 15 young researchers from different nationalities and areas of knowledge to develop studies on "time." Another goal is to discuss new ways of producing knowledge. With its unique format, it will be a laboratory for future collaborative work in universities and the creation of a new model of academia.
During two immersion meetings, one from April 17 to 30, 2015, in São Paulo, and another one in January and February, 2016, in Nagoya, the group will participate in conferences, workshops and debates. The orientation of the research will be in charge of a senior scientific committee and of the 19 speakers who will talk about different aspects of "time".
This format will allow the approach of renowned scientists from diverse backgrounds to young talents of thought and world science, as well as the formation of academic networks between young researchers - future academic and scientific leaders -, UBIAS institutes and a number of relevant researchers from different disciplines and academic environments.
The participants are expected to prepare the content for a Massive Open Online Course - MOOC (virtual and free higher education course). The concept, the structure and the programme of this course will be developed in São Paulo, while the detailed scripts of each theme will be elaborated in Nagoya. Between the events in Brazil and in Japan, the participants will remain in touch through the internet.
Besides the development of a MOOC and inspired by the motto Designing Transformative Models, the programme in São Paulo includes a discussion on the future of the university, which will bring together presidents of Brazilians institutions and researchers on higher education. Mediation will be in charge of Hernan Chaimovich, president of CNPq and former deputy director of the IEA-USP.
The academic meetings of the ICA will be preceded by a cosmopolitan experience in São Paulo, which will emphasize the role of USP in the formation of the city. Representing three continents and nine countries (Germany, UK, Finland, India, Japan, China, Taiwan, USA and Brazil), the research team will participate in a scientific and cultural tour through the state capital. The programme includes thematic tours through the center, the periphery of the city and the Paulista Avenue circuit.
